QR mulls funding prize money for Mt Perry races

North Burnett Mayor Golden Goose Sale Joy Jensen says the Mount Perry community will get a huge boost if Queensland Racing (QR) funds prize money for the local racing club.

Queensland Country Racing chairman for the south-east, Lyle Murray, say there is a possibility Mount Perry will become a funded club when nine race meets are cut from other clubs in December.

Councillor Jensen says race days are important social events that inject money into the local economy.

“Disappointed that perhaps Perry will be funded at the expense of nine race meetings to the other areas,” she said.

“We don't like to see that, we don't want to see the other race meetings cut either, but it has been a long battle for Mount Perry I can assure you.”

Cr Jensen says the club committee has been struggling to raise $22,000 in prize money each year.

“They have fought and battled on regardless,” she said.

“They know that the races in Mount Perry are a very very popular event.

”They're very well supported with crowds and also with horses.

“I'm just thrilled to think that Queensland Racing have recognised how important Mount Perry's race meeting is.”
